A Teacher's Guide to assigning Modified Pecha Kucha Style Presentations 10 x 10
Modified Pecha Kucha 10 x 10 is a presentation style for elementary students or beginning presenters. It is not tied to Microsoft Powerpoint or Google Slides. At my school, we use both. In a virtual world, we use Google Slides. Modified Pecha Kucha teaches students how to build an image-based and voice-based presentation in a Pecha Kucha style.
Regular Pecha Kucha 20x20 is practiced by adults and is almost seven minutes of total speaking time speaking on a topic. This is a little bit much for most beginning elementary-age (8-10 year-old) students. Instead of the regular 20 x 20 or 6:40 presentation, this modified Pecha Kucha style is 10 slides where the student speaks for 10 to 20 seconds about each slide, which is about 1:40 to 3:20. Using Flipgrid assignments with a two-minute to 8-minute recording window gives the students enough time to click start screen share, click over to start the slides, take a calming breath, and start talking. There is usually ample recording time left even if the kids have a glitch, it is OK. The are allowed to edit the beginning and end of the recording window if they choose, but this technicality does not impact their final grade.

Modifications: Some students will need the number of slides adjusted down or up, especially for Unit 1. My students understand if I give them a range, that they can work within that range. I introduce the goal is 10 slides. Then, after three lessons, I have some students producing 3 to 5 slides per class, and are ready to record their voice. Meanwhile, others have not produced a single slide yet. I emphasize quality over quantity.

Benefits of Pecha Kucha styles for ESOL, ELL, and English Language Learners: English Language Learners will have a wide range of speaking needs.
Beginning English speakers might say a single word or phrase about the slide, and benefit from having speaker notes in English or their preferred language. The beginner might also use a lot more pronouns while pointing differences or similarities with the mouse pointer. These are all valid modifications of the style, at least for our class instruction. Intermediate English speakers might rely on the minimal typed words the image and then start explaining the image using social language, or do a brief explanation of the words themselves and similarities or peculiarities of their preferred language and English. Advanced Intermediate speakers typically have a good command of common every-day English words, and are developing content specific English words. These newly acquired words are easily typed on the image, and then explained verbally when presenting. The goal is that students, experiencing success with the modified 10x10 assignment, might enjoy the challenge of a 20 x 20 presentation, especially in the upper elementary grades. |

Unit 2 October
Pecha Kucha for Social Studies with optional Bibliography. Teacher directed research and electronic resources provided. [4 asynchronous virtual lessons 45 minutes weekly of Computer lab] [Discovery students have 4 asynchronous virtual lessons 45 minutes weekly of Discovery class for research]. Student will research, build and record a Pecha Kucha style presentation, 10x10 to 20x20, showing their understanding of a social studies topic. Electronic research links are provided per grade level social studies standards. Requirements:

Unit 3 November
Pecha Kucha 20x20 with Bibliography for Social Studies Curriculum Topic. Less teacher directed research and electronic resources in Unit 3 than in Unit 2. Students direct their own research and electronic resources much more than Unit 2. [2 virtual lessons 45 minutes weekly] Student will build and record a Pecha Kucha style presentation, up to 20x20, showing understanding of a new social studies topic. The quality of the student's finished product for Unit 3 should be a marked improvement from Unit 2, including a general citation on the title slide. Requirements:

2018-2019 school year. My first year of instruction on Pecha Kucha Presentation Style (modified). I did not give enough emphasis to the technical process. I handed students a list of Black History Month people, places, ideas, and themes. The students choose their topic from the list or their own mind. Results were few students completed the project in Pecha Kucha format. Most of the slides had large chunks of information copy & pasted from resources the kids did not read or comprehend. My point was to teach the Pecha Kucha format and I was only partially successful. I had a lot to improve on from that year.
