Welcome to Teacher Resources. I have collected some tech things over my years of teaching & life in business. Use them if you wish.

Visuwords.com Visual Thesaurus, Dictionary, and Interactive Lexicon

Visuwords is a really neat website that makes dictionary and thesaurus come to life. Words are linked "word-web" style. There is a key that tells users how the words are linked. If a user clicks a word, the map re-aligns to show how a web of words are connected. It is very powerful tool that should help with language development with learners of English and native speakers.

Sample screens in the Visuwords website

This is the legend, explaining all the color-coded, and shape coded relationships.  Sample of the word "school."

PrePrimer Sort - A Microsoft Excel "game".

A Microsoft Excel Sorting Exercise.
Students should know CTRL+C, CTRL+V, CTRL+X, CTRL+A, CTRL+S.

Answer Garden

Answer Garden:
This answer garden can be gotten to by this web address:  https://answergarden.ch/371189
Or, you can type right into this window and see the words appear.

Answer Garden is Free. There is no need to open an account if you just have a quick question you want kids to answer.

Linoit Sticky Notes Bulletin Board

Linoit is a virtual bulletin board where collaborators can attach electronic sticky notes. Notes can be color coded, graphics can be added. The teacher can be a moderator, or not.

Does require a teacher to register an account and sign in.

Math talk doesnt' work as well using Answer Garden.

 Let's try Linoit.

Wordle (solitary version of Answer Garden) & Tagul

Wordle (Use this in Firefox, because of the Java)

www.wordle.net

Independent version of Answer Garden

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to your own desktop to use as you wish.

1.    In Firefox, go to www.wordle.net

2.    Click on “Create your own”

3.    Type in or copy your word list

Have a purpose for your WORDLE….not just printing…but what is the output going to be used for?  See SAMR Model.

Example of Very High Technology Integration

Using biography and social study map skills, how would you teach elementary students about the underground railroad?

Participate in this Answer Garden:
What tasks would you use to teach Grade 2 about the underground railroad?

Same Topic... Now let's take a look at a redefinition of the task to something previously inconceivable (This task is very high on the SAMR Model.)

Office 365 One Note & Office 365 Sway

OneNote (Office 365)***disabled in DCSD Platform
  • OneNote Class Notebook & My Notebooks
  • OneNote tutorial http://onenoteforteachers.com/
  • Possible STEM Notebook for advanced students and students struggling to write
  • Each student has a district email address for interactivity and collaboration.
Microsoft Sway (Office 365 Tool)
  • Microsoft Sway https://sway.com/9dKkUdlJqnxzLomr
  • Persuasive Writing Tool!!!
  • It’s like Word + PowerPoint combined.
  • Great little program for students to create products – especially persuasive and expository. It takes writing to a new level.
  • The District already has it in our 365 Toolbox.

TinyURL.com

http://tinyurl.com/

This shortens a really long URL into a Tiny URL.
Why would I do this?
Shorter URLs are easier to type in. If you can't QR or Augmented Reality the link, consider using tiyurl.com

Making QR Codes

  • 1st Decide what content you want the QR Code to Link to.
  • You can do text only - like a parent reminder or a note on homework
    • You can type that kind of message right into the QR Reader.
  • If you want to link to a video your students made, you'll have to upload it to your school webpage. Then copy that URL address and put it into the QR Generator.
  • Here are two equally good QR Code Generators:
    • http://www.qr-code-generator.com/   (light blue screen)
    • https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/  (light green screen)

A PowToon Assignment - In Less Than 1 Hour

This is my first PowToon.
I've never used PowToon before.
It is a Demo for my fellow teachers.
I wanted to make it in less than an hour from sign up to publish.
I wanted it to explain another option for teachers to use to make engaging assignments.
I wanted it to show what kids could be assigned - as a higher level, previously inconcievable form of assessment - in other words - an assignment at the highest levels on the SAMR Model.

Vocabulary.com

Students can learn vocabulary quickly. It feels like a game. It's not an app, but a web based application.

Teachers can enter up to 100 pages of text and make a frequency-based, or difficulty-based vocabulary list.

Teachers and students can enter a list of words for study of those specific words.

Why Tech Integration?

  • College and Career readiness
  • Personalized Learning
  • STEM Process demands
  • Our students are digital natives so tech hooks them !
  • EOCTs tests students in integrated ways
  • Our phones can tell us who, where, when and what
  • We must teach how and why!

“I try to come up with lessons that I know I have to cover, and then see where I can embed the technology in there without it being just fluff or just something extra that we do,” Crissy Wheeler of Barboursville Elementary School, Barboursville, West Virginia.       .............................

Aurasma ideas - The options are only limited by your imagination.

  4. "Know Abacus" App - This app is tutorial and game based. It teaches the Soroban, the Japanese 6 bead abacus. To experience this app, students will learn "friends of 5" in a tactile way that is truly amazing. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/know-abacus/id641867438?mt=8

SAMR Model  (Similar to Blooms Technology Taxonomy)

AMR In 120 seconds -- http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2013/06/samr-model-explained-for-teachers.html

Before you start reading the presentation, here is a refresher about SAMR model levels:

1- Redefinition
tech allows for the creation of new tasks,
previously inconceivable (more of an artistic creation).

2-Modification
Technology allows for significant task design

3- Augmentation
Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvements

4- Substitution
technology acts as a direct tool substitute with no functional change.
